Small-holding farming and gardens have something in common: they feed their people. They are a self-providing or subsistance economy, but the surplus will be sold on the market to earn money. School gardens offer the children the possibility to learn in the nature, in the fresh air and working with their own hands, feeling the soil, smelling the plants. They learn how to collect water, care for the seed and the compost, in order to farm ecologically. Urban agriculture, community gardens are mostly run by groups or cooperations. That makes it easier to defend the land against the greed of the “developers”. In the South the aggression of multinational companies to promote chemical dependent hybrid and GMO seeds pose a threat to women's sovereign economy. Women's actions through preserving seeds, exchange and links at global level can challenge the aggression.

In order to tackle the multiple crises, a radical transformation of our economic system is necessary. In many places, different alternative economic models are already discussed and tried out, movements arise. On this panel, we link degrowth, solidarity economy and the work of unions. What chance do practical projects of alternative economies have in the surrounding growth economy? Does solidarity economy need macro-economic degrowth concepts in order to gain a certain stability, or are solidarity companies the answer to missing growth in the global North? What is the situation like in Latin America? Could solidarity economy be a solution to the fear of unions of degrowth? And what could a cooperation on both a theoretic and practical level look like?

Seit 2003 bauen die Zapatistas ihre autonomen Strukturen im Südosten Méxicos auf. Ihre Autonomie basiert auf ihren kollektiven, räte-demokratischen Selbstregierungsformen, der eigenständigen Organisierung der Frauen und ihre aktive Partizipation auf allen Ebenen, einem unabhängigen, selbstgeschaffenen Gesundheits-und Bildungssystem und kollektiver Arbeit in allen zapatistischen Gemeinden. Zehntausende von zapatistischen Indígenas schaffen derart eine solidarische, d.h., nicht-kapitalistische Gesellschaft, in der der mexikanische Zentralstaat keinerlei Einfluss mehr hat.

SSE appears as a sign of hope; it is possible to build a more just, less predatory and more democratic world. But it is not only necessary that the SSE ceases to be minority and wide; it is also very important to be able to respond to current challenges in Europe. This round table will attempt to delimit and define these concepts showing there is another economy conceptualization based on multitude of emanating experiences.
